Ever So Clever

By Tracy Astle

Words are our tools for creating the images, thoughts and feelings we want our readers to experience, so I hope that as writers we are especially appreciative of particularly creative uses and/or combinations of words. When we read passages like that it can spur our own creativity.

In hopes of helping our creative juices be as fresh as the juice coming from the oranges off my tree this time of year,  I thought I'd share a clever little thing a client shared with me. Unfortunately, I don't know who wrote this, so I can't give credit where credit is due. We can just hope that good karma comes to them for sharing, okay? Okay.

WHERE I'VE BEEN

I have been in many places, but I 've never been in Cahoots. Apparently, you can't go alone. You have to be in Cahoots with someone. I've also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there. I have, however, been in Sane. They don't have an airport; you have to be driven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my friends, family and work. I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I'm not too much on physical activity anymore. I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go, and I try not to visit there too often. I've been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm. Sometimes I'm in Capable, and I go there more often as I'm getting older. One of my favorite places to be is in Suspense! It really gets the adrenalin flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age I need all the stimuli I can get! I may have been in Continent, but I don't remember what country I was in. It's an age thing.

Do you have any authors you think are exceptionally good at word crafting?

  1. I have been reading the Ranger's Apprentice series written by Aussie author James Flanagan. His ability to take peoples that we know like the Scottish who become the Scotti is amazing. I enjoyed his "take" on England, Japan, etc. It was fun to figure out who these groups resembled.

  2. Have you been in Clement? We've visited there before, but the weather was so terrible that we cut our vacation short.

  3. Fun post.

Tracy, is it possible to borrow the Where I've Been little essay? If so, is there someone I can give the credit to?

  5. Terri - Never read him. I'll have to check his stuff out.

Leah - You win the Ever So Clever award of the day!

    Valerie - Thanks. I'm glad.

Cindy - Share away, but as much as I would love to give credit to the author, the copy I saw of this had no author's name on it. Hmmm, I wonder if an Internet search would turn up that info. If I find out I'll let you know.
